History of Gujarati Cultural Society (GCS)

A group of about 60 hoteliers founded GCS in 1984.  Each hotelier gave $6,000 to purchase a 7 acre tract located at 126 Brannon Street in Grand Prairie and proceeded to construct a community hall with 16,000 square feet of inside space.

This group of hoteliers used to rent similar size space at various places in the Dallas / Fort Worth metroplex to celebrate many religious and cultural events.  In 1984, they thought, “Why don’t we have our own place instead of renting at different places?”   The idea caught up fast and the group put together $360K in less than a week.  This was a big sum in 1984, but was enough to buy the land and also construct a hall with four walls, a roof and basic air conditioning and heating.

Today, many Indian groups have similar facilities, but for 1984 this was the first time any Indian group in the United States have accomplished anything of this magnitude.

Over the years; as more Indian hoteliers made DFW their home; each one of them contributed up to $6,000 to join GCS.  This allowed the society to expand in many ways including increasing the floor space to 26,000 square feet with modern kitchen facilities for up to 1,500 guests.  This multi-purpose facility is the home for indoor volleyball and basketball tournaments, children’s playground, movie screenings, theater for live performances, social parties, meetings, large weddings, and celebrations of various religious events including Navrati Garba, Bhajans, Diwali, etc.

GCS has over 450 family members who are mostly Hoteliers from Surat, Navasari and Valsad District in South Gujarat.  This membership is growing each year.  Every new hotelier in DFW joins this prestigious society and makes it even strong.
